Understand the AI Visibility Tab

Once you connect GA4 (and optionally Search Console), the AI Visibility tab classifies every visit by source type and surfaces opportunities where AI assistants are most likely to cite your content.

All Traffic vs AI Visibility

The Analytics page has two tabs. 'All Traffic' shows total sessions, top sources and top pages — this is the standard view. 'AI Visibility' filters and re-classifies the same data to highlight AI-driven traffic.

How sources are classified

Searchlight tags each source automatically: AI (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and others), SEO (google, bing, duckduckgo organic), Social (linkedin, x, facebook, reddit, etc.), Direct, or Other. The classification updates as new AI assistants appear.

AI Discovery Potential

This view merges Search Console queries with GA4 engagement data and ranks queries by 'AI citation potential' — informational, question-style queries where you have impressions but limited clicks. These are the queries AI assistants are most likely to answer with a citation.

  1. 1

    Pick a high-potential query

Sort by AI Potential score and pick the top informational query you can answer better than the current SERP.

  2. 2

    Improve the matching page

Run a Searchlight scan on the page, fix structured data and content clarity issues, then re-check impressions and citations after 1–2 weeks.

Bots vs Referred Visitors — don't confuse them

AI bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot…) are crawlers reading your pages so AI assistants can summarise or cite them — they live in your server logs, never in GA4. AI-referred visitors are humans clicking a citation inside ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude — those do show up in GA4. The AI Visibility tab keeps the two cleanly separated, and recommends a tracking path for bot visits based on what we detect on your site.
